Living Transmission

Knowledge received and transmitted

Our teaching stands within living chains of scholarly and spiritual transmission connected to generations of scholars and spiritual masters of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah.

Traditional Islamic learning is not approached merely as information extracted independently from books. Students study through teachers and inherited scholarly traditions in which classical texts, methods of interpretation and disciplines of study are transmitted from one generation to the next.

These traditions guide how knowledge is read, understood and practised. This page explains the wider traditions identified in the Institute's supplied lineage material without presenting a complete person-by-person chain.

The Scholarly Tradition

Two beacons of the Sunni tradition

The Institute's supplied lineage identifies scholarly transmission through traditions connected to two significant Sunni scholars. The material does not set out a complete named chain from Mufti Amir to either figure.

01

Imām Rabbānī, Shaykh Aḥmad Sirhindī

Mujaddid Alf-i Thānī

Imam Ahmad al-Sirhindi, known as Mujaddid Alf Thani and Imam Rabbani, represents the second scholarly tradition identified in the supplied lineage material. The name of Imam Rabbani Institute reflects its connection with this inherited scholarly tradition.

02

Imām Aḥmad Riḍā Khān

Aʿlā Ḥaḍrat

Known as Sayyidi A'la Hazrat, Imam Ahmad Rida Khan represents an important strand of the Sunni scholarly tradition identified in the Institute's supplied lineage material. His place on this page concerns the preservation of orthodox belief and the transmission of Sunni scholarship.

Khayrabadi Methodology

A rigorous method of scholarly study

The Institute's approach to the traditional and rational sciences is shaped by the rigorous methodology of the Khayrabadi scholarly tradition. Study proceeds through a connected sequence that moves from the wording of a text to the reasoning it contains.

  1. 01

    The original text

Close engagement with the original classical text.

  2. 02

    Terminology

    Precise explanation of technical terminology.

  3. 03

    The issue

Careful formulation of the question or issue under discussion.

  4. 04

    The proof

Detailed analysis of arguments and proofs.

  5. 05

    Objections

Examination of objections raised against an argument.

  6. 06

    Responses

Study and evaluation of the responses given to those objections.

What This Develops

Understanding the reasoning of the text

Students are trained to understand more than the translation of a passage or the conclusion it records. They learn to follow the structure and reasoning of the discussion itself.

Spiritual Transmission

Spiritual lineages

01

Qadiri

The Qadiri spiritual lineage

02

Shadhili

The Shadhili spiritual lineage

03

Naqshbandi

The Naqshbandi spiritual lineage

Mufti Muhammad Amir Kelani Al-Azhari is connected through the Qadiri, Shadhili and Naqshbandi spiritual traditions. These established lineages form part of his spiritual formation and transmission.

These spiritual chains pass through generations of recognised scholars and spiritual masters and ultimately return to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Among these traditions are chains notable for the comparatively small number of transmitters through whom the Prophetic inheritance has been conveyed.

An Inherited Trust

More than names and affiliations

Scholarly and spiritual lineages are not presented merely as titles, affiliations or historical connections. They carry a continuing responsibility to preserve and transmit the principles that give the tradition its substance.

  • Sound belief
  • Sincere worship
  • Refined character
  • Disciplined scholarship
  • Service to the Ummah

Knowledge joined with practice

Our aim is to unite knowledge with practice, intellectual development with spiritual purification, and faithfulness to the classical Sunni tradition with the ability to address the needs and challenges of the present age.
